WEEKLY SCRIPTURE FOCUS

When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, "Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us." So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger. When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart. The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.

Luke 2:15-20

WORSHIP FOCUS

Worship God today as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

SUMMARY OF PRAYER

Father, forgive me for those times when I have lived as through this world were the only kingdom. Forgive me for those times when I have not anticipated Your return; when I have not hoped in You. Give me the wisdom to live for Your kingdom. Fill this world with the knowledge of Who You are and what You have done, and give me a longing for the day when I will see You face to face.

Tuesday, Day 2 - Seeing the Signs

DAILY SCRIPTURE

"...And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah; for out of you shall come forth a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel."

Matthew 2:6 (NIV)

DAILY THOUGHT

The magi may have been priests/astrologers, members of a chief ruling party of Persia, who shifted from holding positions of power to positions of influence. Theirs was a world where magic was a form of religion. They would have been adept at interpreting stars and dreams. Some other traditions say they came from Ancient Babylon. Either way, they traveled across an entire continent.

Being astrologers, their eyes were constantly on the stars. In their country in the east, they must have seen the extraordinary celestial anomaly that historical documents describe. They interpreted the sign as signifying the birth of an extraordinary person in the land of Judea, over which the star appeared.

DAILY REFLECTIONS

Think for a moment about the ways you identify with the magi — about the things that prompted them to make this journey, and the things that might have impeded them.

What unusual signs is God giving you of His presence in your life?

What are the things that most quickly hinder you in your journey?

PRAYER FOCUS

Ask God to prepare your heart for your personal, spiritual Advent journey this year.
